My 5 Summer Must Haves

Here we are. Right in the middle of the sweltering dog days of summer.  My car thermostat read 95°F this afternoon, which made me wistful for low humidity and my wavy hair’s favorite temperature –  72.

Summer’s heat and humidity can make staying lean and feeling fresh difficult. If you’re like me, the heat takes a toll, and I don’t always feel on top of my health and beauty game. This summer, I decided to be proactive and do a few things to make the sizzling days of summer bearable and a lot more fun.

Here are my five summer must haves:

DIY Protein Powder

DIY is thee most delicious protein powered I have ever tried. It’s made with over 30 superfoods including pumpkin seed protein concentrate, six different types of seeds, four different superfruits, coconut, almonds, and an abundance of superfood concentrates. Commando Underwear

Have you gone Commando yet? I have and let me tell you, it’s amazing! I know, ladies. Spanx is usually the go to. But, if you’re looking for a little coverage under a light, summery outfit, Commando is the way to go. Their underwear, camis, or slips are perfect to wear under a semi-sheer dress. Whether you’re wearing the thong, girl short, or boy short, you will feel confident and comfortable. It’s almost as good as wearing nothing at all.

Stop Working Out!

I have a difficult time staying motivated to work out in the summer. There’s always a reason to relax, have a drink, and go to the beach. After more than a few missed workouts this summer, I’ve decided that I am never working out again!

What? I’ve made a conscious choice to give up working out. From now on I am TRAINING. Do you know the difference between working out and training? Training is working out with a goal. For years, I worked out by lollygagging through my cardio and barely breaking a sweat. But now? I’ve decided to transform my body and that requires training.

I’ve cleaned up my diet. I’ve started taking superfood supplements. And most importantly, I’ve completely super charged my workouts with an inspiring trainer, Ashley Halley.

It doesn’t matter what your training goal is. It could be to be stronger, fitter, run a marathon, or simply have a tighter butt. All that matters is that you have a goal and you start TRAINING to reach that goal. Focus + determination + inspiration = TRAINING.

Avène Thermal Spring Water

My fair, Eastern European skin doesn’t like the heat. Whether it’s heat from the weather or from working out, when it’s hot, my rosacea flares up. Those pesky, red blood vessels make my face look pink and inflamed. Skin guru, Kaisa Marshall, of Skin NV turned me onto Avène Thermal Spring Water to cool down my face and prevent a rosacea flare up.

I carry a bottle in my purse or gym bag, and whenever I feel the heat doing a number on my face, I spray a light mist all over my face. Avène is also perfect to use after a training session. It keeps your face refreshed, cool, and hydrated.

It’s also great to use while flying. Airplane cabins are notoriously dehydrating. Spray a little on your face a few times during a long flight and you will arrive looking fresh and rested.

On my recent trip to New York City, I went to C. Wonder, one of my favorite stores for accessories and chic home finds. They were having their summer madness sale, which meant everything was at least 50% off. I scored this super cute white tote for $38. Another $10 got me the pink monogram. It’s the perfect tote for carrying around all my summer gear.

Birkenstocks ~ An Orgasm For Your Feet

Since buying my first pair of Birkenstock sandals a month ago, my feet have been in ecstasy. I’d like to tell you that I bought them for the unbelievable comfort or the idyllic arch support. But that wouldn’t be the truth. I bought them because it seems that these good for your feet shoes are now en vogue.

Yes. You read that correctly. Birkenstocks are now fashionable. Once only seen on hippies and grungy scenesters, you’ll now see Birkenstocks on chic people walking the streets of Paris, New York, and Los Angeles. You’ll find them on the pages of the J.Crew and Athleta catalogs. It seems fashionistas everywhere have fallen in love with this ultra comfy German sandal.

Birkenstocks have a long history. The company dates back to the 1770’s, when a German cobbler fiddled around with making more comfortable shoes. Over the centuries since, family members have carried on the torch of making sustainable shoes that promote orthopedic health.

The idea behind the Birkenstock design is to have the arch of the shoe rise up to meet your foot. This incredible arch support takes excess pressure off your heels and the balls of your feet. Equalizing your weight across the length of your foot leads to fewer leg and back problems. Since wearing mine, I have noticed that my lower back feels looser and my hamstrings less tight. People who suffer from sciatica or pirifomis issues will also benefit from wearing Birkenstocks.

My first pair of Birkenstocks was a safe fashion choice. Tan leather top on a tan bottom with just a swoosh of turquoise at the sole. My second pair was a bit more daring. White patent leather on a cork sole. I bought them after reading this in The New York Times style section:

This is the pair that got me stylishly through long days of eating, drinking, and shopping on a recent trip to Manhattan.

My Birkenstocks are so comfortable that I don’t want to wear any other shoes. When I’m pressed to put on heels for a night on the town, I pout for the first 10 minutes, wondering why I didn’t just wear my Birks with my Clover Canyon dress.

My Oscar Speech

“Me? I won? Did they really call my name?” I stumble out of my seat, kiss my adoring husband, and after what seems like an eternity, I finally make it to the stage steps.

“Don’t fall,” I tell myself repeatedly. Chances are if I did, I wouldn’t look as graceful as Jennifer Lawrence. And truth be told, I’m growing weary of JLaw’s “oh woe is me, I’m such a klutz” routine. Elegance and authenticity are the keys to this moment.

As I take the podium and cradle my golden friend, I look out at the audience and pause for a moment, taking it all in. I remember that 40 million people are watching, and in this moment I know why this awards ceremony touches so many people.

For all of us who have dreamed of winning an Academy Award, or doing anything that sets our hearts on fire, here’s why the Oscars matter.

The Chance to Celebrate Glamour

For most people, there are only a handful of times that they get to be utterly glamorous. Prom. Their wedding. An occasional ball or two. But for the Hollywood set, they get to live the glamorous life more times than they probably enjoy.

For the rest of us plopped on our sofas drinking wine and wearing yoga pants, we celebrate glamour by ogling celebrity gowns and jewels. We tune into the legendary catwalk that is the red carpet, and we swoon.

So thank you, Cate Blanchett, for your unique beauty and for floating down the red carpet in this timelessly gorgeous frock. You are my style inspiration.

Bearing Your Soul is a Valued Endeavor

With awards going to Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto for Dallas Buyer’s Club, Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, and Lupita Nyong’o for Twelve Years a Slave, we learn that bearing your soul for the sake of your passion does not go unnoticed. In fact, it inspires others to do the same.

It wasn’t that long ago that Matthew McConaughey was starring is syrupy rom-coms, swooning girls, and minting money. The livin’ was easy. McConaughey could have stayed there in the sweet spot, but instead he wanted to work outside his comfort zone. He wanted to get gritty and uncomfortable. And that he did.

Losing forty pounds to play the role of a lifetime, his focus was undeterred. He risked the raw exposure of his talent to tell the story of a man who’s existence could have easily been hushed by the decades gone by. It’s here at the crossroads of where art meets life that you realize the two are really one in the same.

So thank you, Matthew, Jared, Cate, and Lupita, for reminding us that when you bear your soul, magic happens. And whether 40 million people see it or only you do, a seismic shift occurs and an ordinary human experience becomes an extraordinary one.

A Reminder to Dream Bigger

Academy Award-winning makeup artist Matthew Mungle was raised on a dairy farm in Oklahoma. Growing up he loved horror movies and monster films. By fifteen, he was stealing his mom’s old makeup and making his own costumes. His parents supported his passion and encouraged him to pursue it. Hollywood wasn’t just a dream for him. It was a goal. And in 1993, he won an Oscar for his work in Dracula.

Haven’t we all dreamed of doing something worthwhile? Something that lights us up inside. Something that as a kid was considered “playing.” And a good number of us have taken those dreams and put them on a shelf and are schlepping our way through life, focused on the mundane.

Lupita Nyong’o might have said it best in her eloquent acceptance speech, “When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from your dreams are valid.”

So thank you, Matthew and Lupita, for reminding us that no matter how crazy they seem, our dreams are valid and that we should all dream a little bigger.

What to Pack for Sailing the Islands

4 islands…6 friends…12 days

I’m getting ready for my summer sailing trip. My husband and I will fly St. Martin, where we will charter a sailboat from the Moorings. With four friends, we’ll sail the clear blue water around St. Martin, Anguilla, St. Bart’s, and Saba.

Living on a sailboat for over a week is a life changing experience. The bathrooms are small, the air conditioning may not work, and the only way to get to most islands is to swim or take a dinghy. It’s not a glamorous endeavor.

But on what other trip can you get rocked to sleep by the gentle roll of waves? Or drink a glass of wine with sea life below you and the Southern Cross above you? Ah, life is so simple when all you worry about is where you left your book, which sunscreen to apply, and whether it’s time for a boat drink. It’s nothing short of magical.

With all that said, having six people on a boat for twelve days can create a few questions about what to pack. We’ve sailed other islands before, including two trips around the British Virgin Islands, so I’ve had a few opportunities to overpack, under pack, and pack all the wrong things.

With all this experience, I thought I’d share with you the right things to pack. Here are a few highlights of what I’m taking this time around ~

  • 2 TERVIS TUMBLERS WITH LIDS. The boat is stocked with some essentials like silverware and plastic dinnerware but there are no Tervis Tumblers. Keeping my drink cold on the sailing trip is one of my only responsibilities, so I take it seriously.
  • 2 WINE THERMOSES. I bought these at Nordstrom rack. They hold an entire bottle of wine and the airtight, screw top makes them ideal for travel. An added benefit is that they keep beverages cold all day. I’ll use them for water and the occasional vodka and soda.

  • SUNSCREEN. These days I like Sun Bum for my body. It has fewer bad chemicals and the smell takes me back to my Hawaiian Tropic filled teenage years. I’m taking a variety – lotion, sprays, 15, 30, 50. For my face, I use something with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide and a 50 SPF.

  • 4 BEACH TOWELS. The Moorings provides bath towels but not beach towels. There’s no washer or dryer on board, so I’ll bring 2 for me and 2 for my husband. Depending on how often  we use them, we may have to wash them at a laundromat on one of the islands.
  • POLARIZED SUNGLASSES. Polarized lenses protect your eyes from the sun and enable you to see color variations better than regular lenses. The water is even more beautiful when seen through the right glasses.
  • VIBRAM  5 FINGER SHOES. These shoes are a game changer. They are like gloves for your feet. The idea is that your feet are healthier when you engage each toe. The hard rubber bottoms also protect your feet while snorkeling and walking in the water. When on vacation, I exercise in them. Not having to pack running shoes saves me a lot of space in my suitcase.

  • 2 PAIRS OF SANDALS. 1 casual. 1 dressy. Dinner at an upscale restaurant in St. Bart’s or Anguilla will require a fancier sandal with a little bling.
  • 5 BATHING SUITS. I’m taking mostly solids so I can mix and match for different looks.
  • 6 COVER-UPS. When sailing and island hopping, you spend most of your time in bathing suits and cover-ups. Think laying around reading, jumping in the water to cool off, and snorkeling. I take more cover ups than anything so that I feel stylish and fresh without much effort. And a chic cover up is essential for an island lunch.
  • 2 FUN NECKLACES. What makes a simple sundress chic? The right accessories. Here’s one that I’ll be packing to wear to a fun, island dinner.

And last, but not least…

  • 2 BOOKS. Everything Asian by Sung J. Woo. A reviewer said that it’s a charming tale about a Korean immigrant family. I’ve read a short story by Woo. He has a masterful way with words. And my second book is Beautiful Ruins, which I’ve been saving just for this trip.

Life on a boat is the perfect mix of solitude and bonding with friends. Some of my favorite memories were born on starry nights on the back of a sailboat. Sailing is also a perfect reminder that less is more.

Here Comes the Sun ~ Preventing Wrinkles & Skin Cancer

Summer is almost here, which means plenty of fun outdoor adventures and more than our fair share of sun exposure. There’s a lot that goes into buying and applying the correct sunscreen. It’s better to be knowledgeable about protecting yourself. Otherwise, you’ll end up wasting your money, or worse yet, exposing yourself to sun damage and possible skin cancer.

UVA & UVB Rays ~ What’s the Difference?

A good way to remember the difference between UVA and UVB rays is that UVA rays are the main culprit in aging. (A for aging, get it?) These rays penetrate the skin much deeper than UVB rays resulting in damage to your skin at a cellular level. UVB rays cause your skin to tan or burn. (B is for burn.) These rays can also cause skin cancer.

What Should You Look For When Buying Sunscreen?

The most important thing to consider when choosing a sunscreen is whether it is broad spectrum. This type of sunscreen will protect you against both UVA and UVB rays. For all around health, it is also wise to choose a sunscreen without parabens, which can act as hormone disruptors in your body and lead to a litany of health problems.  A good quality sunscreen will also contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which are two ingredients that are essential in preventing premature aging from sun damage.

I use Sun Bum brand sunscreen products. All of the Sun Bum products are broad spectrum, paraben free, oil free, hypoallergenic, and are approved by the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Should You Apply Special Sunscreen to Your Face?

I prefer to use products specifically formulated for the face so I don’t get clogged pores or feel greasy. After much trial and error, I’ve fallen in love with two brands of facial sunscreen: MD Solar Sciences Mineral Tinted Creme and Image Skincare’s Prevention +. Both products are broad spectrum, include antioxidant formulas, and are paraben free.

If you live in the Tampa area, stop by my favorite med spa Skin NV. They sell both of these products along with a wide variety of wonderful anti-aging products.

How Much Sunscreen Should You Use?

On average, people apply about one tablespoon of sunscreen all over their bodies. This is not enough. The SPF protection of sunscreen is significantly reduced if you do not apply the correct amount. The recommended application amount is three tablespoons over your body and about a teaspoon on your face.

How Often Should you Apply Sunscreen?

You should apply sunscreen every two hours. If you swim or work up a sweat, you should apply it more often and be sure that you’re using a water resistant formula. Also, be sure to apply it at least 30 minutes before going into the sun.

When is Your Sun Exposure Increased?

You are at greater risk for sun exposure and damage if you are at a higher altitude. Which means that if you are skiing or hiking, apply sunscreen more often. And while boating, fishing, and playing on the beach are always fun, the reflection of the sun off the water can increase your sun exposure by 50%. So be sure to have your sunscreen with you during these times and slather it on accordingly.

Is it Important to Wear Sunscreen While Driving?

A big, whopping yes! Here’s a photo of a 68 year old man who spent nearly 30 years driving a truck. He did not wear sunscreen.

Notice that the left side of his face, which was exposed to sun coming through the window, is much more wrinkled. The doctor who studied the sun damage said, “The biggest take-home message from all of this is that you can get UV radiation through window glass even if you are just running an errand.”

Looking Stylish While Blocking the Sun

One of my favorite ways to avoid sun exposure is to wear a cool rashguard or a chic hat. This season I’m loving Athleta’s sporty SPF 50 shirts, which come in a variety of colors and sleeve lengths. What I love most about these shirts is how they cover the delicate décolleté area that so easily becomes sun damaged.

My new favorite sun hat just arrived! After seeing Leslie Mann wear it in the movie, “The Other Woman,” I had to have it.

Don’t Forget the Special Areas

Don’t neglect your neck, hands, feet, and décolleté. These areas are thin and they show sun damage and aging more easily than other areas. And the feet, especially between the toes, are a well-known spot for skin cancer.

Why 20 Minutes of Sun Exposure is Good For You

Too much sun can cause pre-mature aging and skin cancer, but did you know that too little sun is also dangerous?

Recent studies have shown that 20 minutes of daily sunlight, without sunscreen, gives your body a vital dose of Vitamin D. Interestingly enough, while called a vitamin, Vitamin D is actually a hormonal steroid that offers tremendous and wide-raging benefits to our health.

Proper dosing of Vitamin D, whether through food, supplementation, or sun exposure, can promote heart health, boost the immune system, and cause an upswing in your mood. It only takes 20 minutes of sun exposure a day to get the maximum benefit so be sure to apply your sunscreen when time’s up.

Coconut Oil ~ Good For You Inside and Out

I was interviewed recently by ABC News about the health benefits of coconut oil. A long time fan of this tropical oil, I was excited to share all the wonderful ways I’d found to incorporate coconut oil into my cooking and beauty routines. I like it so much and believe in it’s health benefits that I’ve even started giving it to my dogs in these treats.

Here’s the lowdown on why coconut oil is good for you inside and out.

Why It’s Good For You

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, a medium chain triglyceride that promotes ideal HDL cholesterol levels and better cholesterol levels overall. Coconut oil is also beneficial in helping maintain a healthy weight because the breakdown of the oil’s fatty acids in the liver causes an increased metabolism. It also supports normal hormone levels and proper thyroid function.

Here are a few more health benefits to consuming coconut oil:

  • Boosts your immune system, fighting off bacteria and viruses.
  • Balances yeast and candida levels in your system.
  • Improves brain function by greasing the wheels.
  • Increases energy levels.

Cooking With Coconut Oil

You can use coconut oil when sautéing, grilling, and baking. Be sure to use only organic coconut oil. You don’t want the pesticides and other toxins to negate the awesome health benefits that coconut oil offers.

Coconut oil is sold either refined or unrefined. Unrefined coconut oil offers more health benefits because it is only minimally processed when the oil is extracted from the coconut meat. Refined coconut oil still offers many health benefits, but because it undergoes more processing, some of the nutrients are stripped from the oil before it is jarred.

You should use unrefined coconut oil if your recipes call for sautéing or baking at a temperature  of 350 degrees or less. For recipes calling for a cooking temperature higher than 350 degrees, use refined coconut oil. If you like cooking spray, try this one.

Coconut Oil in Coffee? 

I’ve also started adding a teaspoon or two of coconut oil to my coffee in the morning. With a dash of stevia and swirl of the spoon, you’ll have a rich morning pick me up that tastes like a treat and keeps you filled up until lunch.

If the oil in your coffee is too much to handle, consider swapping your dairy-based creamer for unsweetened coconut milk. You’ll get the benefit of the healthy fat with a smoother, more traditional taste.

Why Coconut Oil Should Be Part of Your Beauty Routine

In addition to the health benefits, coconut oil also has many wonderful uses in your everyday beauty routine. Here are a few:

  • Use it as an eye makeup remover. It’s a chemical-free way to take off makeup, condition your lashes, and nourish the delicate skin under your eyes.
  • Use it as a lip balm. I especially like to do this before bed. (I like this one by RMS Beauty.)
  • Use it as a cuticle softener.
  • Add raw sugar and use it as an effective, nourishing body or hand scrub. I especially love using this before an event where I’ll be shaking a lot of hands.
  • Add baking powder and use it as a lip exfoliator.

Why It’s Good For Dogs

Consuming coconut oil offers many of the same health benefits for dogs that it does for humans. I’ve started adding it to my dogs’ food every morning. As with any change in their diet, it’s better to do it gradually as to not upset their system. Start out by adding a teaspoon and work up from there. My dogs weigh about 60 pounds, and I give them a tablespoon each. I also give them these treats.

The health benefits for dogs include:

  • Alleviating allergic reactions to pollen and other environmental stimulants.
  • Boosting the immune system.
  • Deterring parasites.
  • Relieving dry skin.
  • Growing a soft, thick, glossy coat.

Whether it’s for you or your furry one, coconut oil offers a slew of amazing health perks. Be sure to add it to your grocery list, and you’ll be feeling the benefits in no time.

EGluten Free Cooking ~ Feel Good Chicken

I’ve never had much of a love affair with cooking. But since going gluten free a few months ago, cooking and I have fallen in love. I’ve enjoyed opening myself up to new ideas. Tasting this and testing that. I’ve sought out beautiful cookbooks that flirt with my senses as I touch the glossy pages.

Over the past few months I’ve discovered quite a few recipes that are not only healthy, but delicious. Even my husband has been clamoring for more gluten free dishes.

Lately, my readers, interested in my gluten free journey, have asked me to share some of my favorite recipes.  Here’s one that I’ve made three or four times in the last month. It’s easy. It’s comfort food. It’s perfect for a cold, winter night’s supper.

That’s why I call it, “Feel Good Chicken.”

What you’ll need:

  • 1 ½  tablespoons coconut or safflower oil
  • 4 chicken breasts (with or without skin; you can also use thighs; buy free range, organic if you can)
  • 1 onion
  • 1 pint of grape tomatoes
  • salt
  • pepper
  • garlic powder
  • parsley flakes
  • 1 ¼ cups of fresh basil leaves
  • a cast iron skillet
  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. On the stovetop, use high heat to warm the oil in the cast iron skillet.
  3. Season both sides chicken with salt, pepper, garlic power, and parsley flakes.
  4. Place seasoned chicken in the cast iron skillet and cook for 5 minutes on each side.
  5. Remove chicken from the skillet and place in a dish.
  6. Place chopped onion, tomatoes, and 1 cup chopped basil in the skillet with the remaining oil and chicken seasoning. Cook until slightly soft, about 7 minutes.
  7. Place the chicken back in the skillet, on top of the cooked vegetables.
  8. Cover the skillet with a lid or aluminum foil and bake in the over for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove, garnish with fresh basil, and ENJOY!

I like to serve mine with steamed green beans or broccoli. Toss either with a bit of truffle oil, salt, and pepper and you have a dish that tastes like you ordered it in a five-star restaurant.

The beauty of this recipe is that you can adapt it to whatever vegetables you enjoy. Use fennel instead of onion. Use mushrooms. Try it with squash. Use sage or rosemary instead of basil. The only limit is your creativity.

Recently, ABC Action News asked me to do a segment about foods that give us soft, radiant, youthful looking skin. Here’s what I shared with them.

 

Foods That Help Reduce Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Collagen is the protein that makes your skin plump and wrinkle free when we’re young. But as we age, collagen growth slows down and we start to see fine lines and hollowing out of our faces. The good news is that eating these foods can help promote collagen growth.

1. Red Bell Peppers. These tasty gems are full of Vitamin C, a great antioxidant for promoting collagen!

2. Pears. They’re loaded with vitamins C, E, and K and tons of wonderful minerals. Buy organic and eat the skin. It’s where all the good stuff is.

3. Cabbage. It has more vitamin C than oranges!

4. Tumeric. This Indian spice has a beautiful yellow color and amazing anti-cancer properties.

Foods For Soft Hydrated Skin

Hydrating your skin is one of the easiest ways to make your skin look better.  Dry skin leads to leathery skin, under eye circles, and wrinkles. Here are a few foods you can eat to make your face happy and hydrated.

1. Coconut. I love coconut in any form. Juice, milk, oil. They all have healthy fats that keep your skin hydrated. Coconut is also loaded with electrolytes and has more potassium than bananas.

2. Avocados. These fatty fruits are full of vitamins A, C, and E. They also contain glutamine, which helps protect your skin from environmental damage.

3. Spinach. This magic vegetable does an amazing job retaining moisture in your skin. It also contains lots of fiber, which helps clean out your insides. Secret beauty tip – clean insides leads to clear skin.

Foods For Clear Radiant Skin

Do you have lackluster and dull skin? Is your complexion ruddy or inflamed? Do you get pimples and breakouts? Eating these foods will help your skin look clear and radiant.

1.  Figs. The number one cause of dull skin is toxins and inflammation in your system. Figs have an amazing ability to remove toxins from your blood.

2.  Sweet Potatoes. I love sweet potatoes. Filled with vitamins A and C and loaded with fiber, this delicious starch is just as good for your body as it is for your face. The beautiful orange color is a hint of the high levels of beta carotene. Prepared with a little coconut oil and cinnamon and you have the perfect fall side dish.

3. Cucumbers. Be sure to buy organic and eat the skin. The silica in the cucumber skin is sure to keep your skin clear and radiant.

4.  Acai. This is fatty fruit from the Amazon is loaded with omega fatty acids. And that bright purple color is what makes this superfood a powerhouse at making your complexion beautiful. I love the frozen acai packets. I add them into my morning green smoothie with some unsweetened coconut milk. It’s delicious!

5.  Lemons. This yellow fruit is high on the liver cleansing list. Again, clean insides = glowing skin. Lemons also help eliminate breakouts. Squeeze a half a lemon and add the juice to sixteen ounces of water first thing in the morning. You’ll jump start your metabolism, clean your liver, and make your skin happy.
